Telkoi: The houses of at least 40 families caved in due to incessant rain over the last couple of days leaving them without roofs on their heads here in Keonjhar district.
While the families took shelter on the verandahs of others, the administration is yet to offer them polythene sheets, it was alleged.
According to reports, the houses of eight families of Behera Sahi, Gandhi Nagar, Danduamunda and Ramchandrapur had collapsed. Similarly, many families of Akula, Sirigida, Saleikena, Oria, Purujoda, Talapada and Shivnarayanpur Goda panchayats have become shelter-less after their houses caved in during the last three days.
Most of the families eked out their living by working as labourers and are left starved after their houses were damaged, it was learnt.
On the other hand, though there are provisions of supply of polythene sheets to the victims, the administration is yet to reach these families, said some villagers. Most of the families have now taken shelter on the verandahs of their neighbours.
Official sources said loss assessment of each village would be made and the department would provide polythene sheets to the affected families.
Meanwhile, four more houses in Kasipada and Anko panchayats of Sadar block in Balasore district caved in following the low pressure-triggered rain. The victims were Amar Kumar Jena, Narahari Das, Dambarudhar Behera and Pagulu Behera. The families have informed the revenue inspector of Rupsa seeking compensation for the damage.
The families would be given financial assistance in accordance with the law, said RI Dinabandhu Kistu.
