Puri: Students of Government Women’s College here have extended their support to the campaign launched by Orissa POST and Dharitri for a plastic-free Odisha.
The students — Sumitra Dalai, Barsha Sahu, Kajal Sahu, Rajalaxmi Sahu, Purnima Kumari Das, Chinmayee Pati, Barsha Behera, Sumitra Pradhan, Subhalaxmi Jena, Priyanka Rout and Pushpalata Pradhan – Tuesday took a pledge to keep their campus free from plastic and polythene.
“Plastic and polythene have emerged as a threat to the environment as well as the animal kingdom. Hundreds of cattle are dying after eating polythene. Dumping of plastic and polythene bags into drains is also causing waterlogging. People should understand the situation and stop using plastic bags,” said Sumitra Dalai.
She urged the state government to make alternate arrangements before imposing a ban on the use of plastic.
Barsha Sahu claimed that use of polythene and plastic was causing harm to the fertility of soil. “We often carry cooked food in polythene bags. There are reports that people are developing health complications after eating food packaged in plastic bags. We welcome the state government’s decision to make Odisha a plastic-free state,” she added. Student Kajal Sahu said they would together create awareness against polythene on their campus.
