Bolangir: Tension prevailed in Bolangir Medical College and Hospital after a newborn died due to delay in administering blood following alleged negligence by staff Sunday night.
After reports surfaced, various outfits rushed to the hospital and vented their ire. They demanded action against the blood bank staff.
When contacted, CDMO Dr Sugyanendra Mishra Mishra assured a probe into the charges. Sources said Durmila Kuanr, wife of Harkishan Kuanr of Kharbahali village under Belpada block in the district, delivered a baby at Kantabanji hospital August 23.
Hospital doctors referred the baby for further treatment to the Bolangir Medical College and Hospital after it was found underweight.
The couple admitted the baby to the special newborn care unit (SNCU) in the mother and child health centre of Bolangir hospital the next day. The baby was undergoing treatment when the doctor asked his parents to arrange 25ml of ‘O’ positive blood after his condition deteriorated Sunday evening.
Family members contacted the blood bank staff for the blood but the latter asked them to come next day morning as the blood packet is not available with them. When they informed the doctors about this, the latter told them to urgently arrange the blood. The family members again ran to the blood bank when the staff gave them 25-ml of blood. They came running back to the hospital but by then the baby had succumbed.
Family members alleged that the blood was supplied to them after a delay of three hours causing the death of the baby.
Suryamani Das, medical officer (in-charge) of blood bank, ruled the charges leveled against the blood bank, false.
