Mohana: Mystery shrouds the death of two sisters whose bodies were recovered from a well in front of their house at Chheligada in Gajapati district early Saturday.
Police reached the village and launched a probe. While no reason has been found for their deaths, locals suspect it was a suicide pact.
The deceased were identified as Swapna Achari, (14), and Kiran Achari (22), daughters of Pramod Achari.
According to sources, Kiran was to get married to a man who stayed in Bhubaneswar. However, due to unknown reasons her alliance broke soon after the engagement.
Since then, Kiran was under stress. It is suspected that unable to bear the trauma, Swapna too jumped into the well. However, the circumstances that led the younger girl to end her life are yet to be ascertained.
Villagers said the two sisters were very close and it is suspected that they might have ended their lives together.
Meanwhile, there are rumours that it might be a case of murder. Locals said the girl had earlier eloped with a youth in the locality. However, her family was against the relationship and brought her back after which they had arranged her marriage elsewhere.
Pramod woke up at night to relieve himself and found the two girls missing. He later alerted other family members, and they saw them dead inside the well and informed the police.
Police and fire brigade rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.
“One of my daughters had earlier eloped with a youth named Ganesh Sahoo. I suspect that Ganesh and his family broke my daughter’s marriage due to which both girls committed suicide,” Pramod said.
“A probe is on. The bodies have been sent to Paralakhemundi for autopsy. Only after the reports come we can say exactly what happened,” said IIC of R. Udaygiri police station, Prabhakar Panda.
