Paradip: The Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train between Brahmapur and Cuttack was extended up to Paradip from Monday, October 8.
The East Coast Railway (ECoR), in a bid to ease heavy rush on the passenger train, has decided to extend the MEMU service up to Paradip where it was greeted with fanfare at the railway station.
According to ECoR, the MEMU train replaced the Cuttack-Paradip passenger train that was running between Cuttack and Paradip, six days a week.
Interestingly, MEMU can accelerate and decelerate faster than other trains. Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala built the MEMU’s 12 coaches with a capacity of 110 passengers each. Moreover, as the MEMU train has engines at both ends, it will not take additional time to change the engines.
“MEMU trains have two engines on both ends and so, no time will be wasted in changing it. Unlike regular trains where a locomotive hauls the coaches, these trains are specially designed with self-propelling motors beneath the passenger cars,” an official said adding that the MEMU train services will be introduced in other sections after reviewing the feedback from the passengers.
