Bhubaneswar: Odisha Jayanti Behera made her state and country proud Tuesday as she clinched a bronze medal in the ongoing Asian Para Games in the women’s 200m T45/46/47 event at the GBK Stadium in Jakarta.
The event, which is basically an event for athletes with limb impairments, the 19-year-old girl clocked a timing of 27.45 seconds to finish the race. China’s Li Lu with 25.82 seconds and Wang Yanping with 26.45 seconds grabbed the first and the second positions respectively.
Jayanti, a gold medallist in the China Open Para Athletic Grand Prix Championship, the Sakhigopal-born girl has also bagged a silver medal in the women’s 100m at the Asian Youth Para Games last year in Dubai.
She didn’t stop there as Jayanti topped in women’s 400m at the World Junior Para Athletic Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland in August last year to bring home gold.
One should be proud of Jayanti, who suffered a burn injury on her left hand and waist while at the age of just one, but she defied all odds to be a successful athlete and bring laurels for the country.
Meanwhile, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik congratulated Jayanti on her medal-winning feat and has also announced Rs 10,00,000 as a prize money.
