Kujang: A man set his wife and in-laws on fire before himself being charred to death over a family row at Panadia village under this police limits in Jagatsinghpur district late Sunday night.
The deceased were identified as Nabaghana Sahu (62), his wife Kamala Sahu (53), daughter Rubina Sahu (22) and son-in-law Harekrushna Mallik (42).
Nabaghana, Kamala and Harekrushna died on the spot while Rubina, who sustained over 80 per cent burns, was rushed to Kujang hospital from where she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where she succumbed to her burns.
The matter came to the fore when co-villagers noticed flames rising from their house and alerted others including the police.
Harekrushna, a native of Tihidi, had come to his in-law’s home to take his wife back home for Kumar Purnima festival. He was married to Rubina six months back.
Rubina, while undergoing treatment at Kujang hospital, claimed the involvement of her husband in the tragedy. She said the incident occurred after her husband Harekrushna poured petrol on them before setting them on fire.
Kujang IIC Dillip Kumar Sahu, based on the dying declaration of Rubina, started a probe even as fire personnel reached the spot and doused the flames.
Harekrushna got caught in fire when his father-in-law
Nabaghana, who was already in flames, caught hold of him. The charred bodies of Nabaghana and Harekrushna were found clasping each other when police recovered them.
Neighbours said Nabaghana gave his daughter in marriage to Harekrushna after his son working in Bangalore proposed the latter’s name for his sister’s marriage. Harekrushna was also working in Bangalore.
Rubina stayed for a month in Bangalore and for a few days at her in-law’s house in Tihidi. However, dispute soon arose between the couple over differences in their age and Harekrushna being from a separate community.
Rubina failed to cope with Harekrushna and came to stay with her parents at her native village. Harekrushna visited his in-law’s village and tried to take back his wife, but in vain as Rubina refused to oblige. The couple would fly into an ugly spat every time Harekrushna visited his in-law’s place and tried to take back Rubina with him.
Highly incensed, Harekrsuhna made up his mind to eliminate the whole family by pouring petrol on them and setting them on fire, the reports added.
