Jajpur: Health officials Wednesday began a probe into the death of a woman, who was allegedly forced by her in-laws to terminate her pregnancy in an advanced stage, at the district hospital here.
A team of doctors, led by Additional District Medical Officer, held discussions with nurses and doctors of the gynaecology department where the abortion was allegedly conducted by a doctor and a nurse.
The Chief District Medical Officer, Baris Kumar Das, said the team would submit the inquiry report and action would be taken against the doctor and the nurse if found guilty.
The probe was conducted after a six-month pregnant unwed woman and her unborn child died after a woman agent and a nurse performed an abortion to terminate her pregnancy at the DHH here Sunday.
The victim, 22-year-old Sipra Mallik (name changed), is a native of Kothadiha village in Brahmabarada under Rasulpur block of the district. She became pregnant out of relationship with Pintu Jena (25), son of Rahas Jena.
Sources said, Sipra fell in love with Pintu and developed physical relationship with him. Later, Pintu left home for his workplace in Hyderabad. Family members after coming to know about her pregnancy called Pintu to come back and accept Sipra as his wife. Pintu came back October 9 and married Sipra in court October 14.
However, their ordeal began when Pintu’s family members refused to accept Sipra as their daughter-in-law as she was pregnant. Pintu acceded to the demand of his family members stating he would accept Sipra as his wife if she underwent an abortion.
Later, Pintu and an uncle of Sipra took her to the DHH where they met a woman agent who agreed to help them in abortion for money.
Later, Pintu and Sipra’s uncle admitted her to gynaecology ward where she underwent preliminary treatment without the knowledge of the authorities. Accordingly, an abortion was conducted on her fetus. However, she succumbed to her abortion due to excessive bleeding.
