Berhampur: As Berhampur gears up to be one of the smart cities in the state, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) is leaving no stone unturned to attain the goal of turning the Silk city into a smart and digital town of the state.
As a step in this direction, the BMC is moving to make the city fully Wi-Fi-enabled. Soon enough, residents here will have seamless free internet connections in various major locations of the city.
The BMC is gearing up to introduce free Wi-Fi services in several priority corridors. The network will cover a stretch of 100m. A total of 2,000 people can use the Wi-Fi facility at a time, it was learnt.
“The city will have Wi-Fi coverage in the coming 75 days. The network will be accessible at around 27 points across Berhampur,” said BMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore adding that a private company has been given the contract to implement and monitor the project.
A total of Rs 90 lakh has been allocated for the purpose, Rathore added. The decision was taken during a programme held on the occasion of Local Self Governance Day.
Among the major locations that would be Wi-Fi-enabled are BMC office, Town Hall, Biju Patnaik Park, Annapurna Market, Sports Arena Complex in Baikunthanagar, Berhampur railway station and the bus stands.
On the other hand, the BMC has been taking steps for a proper traffic system and road facilities in the Silk City. Moreover, CCTV cameras have been installed in major locations to keep a track on the movements of illegal parking, speed limits of vehicles and a check on the movements of anti-socials and thieves at nights.
Meanwhile, the state government has decided to make the state capital Wi-Fi-enabled, keeping in view the hockey extravaganza that is scheduled to be held from November 28 to December 16, 2018 at the Kalinga stadium.
