Tikiri: The Tikiri Post Office in Kashipur block of Rayagada district which was established 68 years ago has not yet become a sub post office thanks to official apathy.
The post office in Koraput Postal Division of Odisha Postal Circle was opened in 1950. Local residents had been demanding the sub-post office tag for this branch post office, but nothing has been done so far.
People said the post office is not getting the sub post office tag due to lack of interest of department officials.
The Tikiri branch post office is now in a miserable shape. There are 11 branch post offices including Tikiri branch post office under Kashipur Sub-Post Office.
Letters and parcels are sent to Kashipur from Rayagda Head Post Office by buses. After that they are distributed to 11 branch post offices. This takes more time. Due to this people served by the Tikiri Post Office get their letters, parcels and other consignments late.
Moreover, the branch post office is facing a staff shortage. The staff shortage has hit local people as ATM cards sent by banks to customers and Aadhaar cards are lying undistributed at the post office.
Reports said that around 200 ATM cards are lying at the post office as the PO does not have enough staffers to distribute them.
Tikiri is considered the economical hub of Kashipur block. There are two high schools, four banks, and a railway station in Tikiri. There is also a factory here.
Meanwhile, the people here said they would hold a protest if no action is taken to improve the post office and the Tikiri branch post office is declared a sub post office.
