Bhubaneswar, May 2: Students of the city are coming together to lend a helping hand to the victims of the earthquake that devastated Nepal April 25 and also rocked some parts of India.
“I was horrified when I saw the news of the earthquake that rocked Nepal on television. So, my friends and I decided to send money and other material to help the affected people. We have collected around Rs 15,000 in cash so far,” said Raju Manding, a student of Rajdhani College.
Sunil Mohapatra, a student of the Madhusudan Institute of Co-operative Management (MICM), expressed sympathy for those hit by the natural disaster. “Around 30 students of this institute have decided to send some money and valuable materials to Nepal. It is our responsibility to support our neighboring country in their time of need. We will also create awareness among people so that they can also lend their helping hands,” said Sunil.
Some of the students plan to send the money through online links, while others intend taking the help of NGOs. “We plan to send funds online to the Nepal Red Cross Society. If that is not feasible, we shall take the help of the state government to send money,” said Sameer Kumar, a student of MICM.
Other students groups have decided to send the money and relief material through reliable NGOs. “People are suffering a lot there. We will take the help of a state-level NGO so that funds and relief material can be sent as soon as possible,” said Sarmistha Dhal, a student of Maharishi College.
“We are also going to organize a rally to spread awareness among people of the city. Our aim is to mitigate the suffering of those affected by the quake,” said Dhal.
“We cannot enjoy ourselves as people suffer in Nepal. Therefore, we have decided to send money and relief material to help the victims of the quake. I am giving some money and clothes,” said Shanti Kumari, a student of Maharishi College.
