Bhadrak, May 2: Upset over shortage of teachers and text books, over 800 students of NC High School here stormed into the office of the district education officer Saturday. Guardians of nearly 200 students had also taken part in it.
The staffs of the office were dismayed to see sudden inrush of so many people into the office. The rushing crowd were shouting in unison—“give us teachers and text books.” The incident, continuing for three long hours, created an unusual situation in the DEO’s office.
Nearly 1560 students were studying in the school from class-VI to Class-X. However, only 15 teachers were managing the classes. The post of headmaster has also been lying vacant for a long time and another teacher was officiating (as in-charge) in his place.
The students also alleged that they have been facing a lot of problems including lack of adequate number of class rooms and desk and benches. The students of Class-VI have been sitting on the floor. Many doors and windows of the school have been damaged. They also stated that students of other high schools have been getting free text books, but they are deprived of this facility.
The students and guardians demanded a replay from the DEO Ranjan Kumar Giri about why no books are distributed among students.
A discussion between the students and the DEO lasted for about an hour. The DEO assured that test books will be distributed by Tuesday while six teachers will be appointed in the school after summer vacations.
The DEO has given written assurance to the students and guardians that a joint meeting of the collector, guardians, and councillors will be held soon to take steps for sorting out various problems of the school.
