Ghasipura, May 13: A postmaster has allegedly embezzled over `7 lakh deposited by scores of tribal people in Kathakata panchayat under this block of Keonjhar district. The accused postmaster, Sujit Patra, has been absconding.
The post office was opened four years ago in the panchayat and received deposits from residents of of Kathakata, Dalaki, Pitanao and Srijanapal.
Besides, the postmaster has borrowed thousands of rupees from the locals. The depositors thronged the postoffice to get back their money Wednesday. They have been doing this for last few days but in vain.
The postmaster has earlier assured the depositors that he will return their money after selling his property. Many depositors alleged that Patra has kept passbooks of people with him and has not yet returned them.
Mamata Dehury claimed to have deposited `83,000 with Patra while Dasra Hembram deposited `1.20 lakh. Depositors held a meeting Wednesday and decided to stage an agitation outside Anandpur head postoffice if their money was not returned in two days. They also demanded Patra’s arrest.
