Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has formed in Sri Lanka’s south-east Bay of Bengal coast. According to the regional office of the Indian Meteorological Department here, it can by April 27 take the form of a severe cyclonic storm.
According to the IMD, the low pressure zone will intensify in the next 48 hours and it is expected to move towards the north-west coast of Tamil Nadu. The landfall is expected to take place in the south eastern districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Under the impact of the landfall, the coastal districts of Odisha including Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Cuttack and Khurda will experience heavy rainfall accompanied winds at great speed.
The IMD, however, has said that the movement of the cyclone will become clear in the next 48 hours. Only then a proper prediction can be made about its strength and density.
“Cyclones do not pass through Odisha in the month of April. It is a rare phenomenon. This is happening due to climatic changes and global warming,” said IMD officials.
Meanwhile the regional meteorological department has also predicted a rise in temperatures till April 30. According to officials, temperatures may soar to 45 degree Celsius in some parts of the state. The people of coastal districts will not have respite from intense heat and sultry weather conditions.
According to the reports available at the IMD centre here, temperatures of over 40 degree Celsius have been recorded in five districts. Titlagarh recorded the highest temperature at 43.5 degree Celsius, followed by Malkangiri (42 degree Celsius), Sundargarh and Subarnapur (40.6 degree Celsius each) and Bolangir (40.5 degree Celsius).
These days sudden Nor’westers has created panic among the people. While Wednesday most districts experienced thunderstorms, the same is expected at some places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput and Gajapati.
