Singer Richa was born 29 August 1980. Richa’s father late Pandit Daya Shankar was a classical singer and was an inspiration for the singer. Richa was fond of music since childhood — about 30 years ago — his family left Uttar Pradesh’s Patiali and moved to Faridabad and now settled in Mumbai.

Richa Sharma sang for the first time at the age of 8 in Jagrata in which she received Rs 11. In an interview, she said that she still has that money with her. Richa added, “My father once said that work hard and enjoy the fruit which you have grown it with your labour.’’

“When I was very young, my father realised that I would become a singer. He had said in front of everyone that my daughter will earn fame in music,” she said.

Her journey to the film industry was not an easy one for a girl who sings at Jagrata. He learnt singing hymns from his father. In 1994, Richa went to Mumbai to perform in a live show.

There, she sang Bhajan at an event to earn her living, during which she got a chance to sing in the Sawan Kumar’s film ‘Salma Pe Dil Aa Gaya’ in 1996. She followed it up with several films until the big hit came in form of Taal where she sang for AR Rahman.

She has also sung for Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’.

The versatile playback singer has also done quite a few albums to showcase her talent. Albums like ‘Ni Main Yaar Nu Sajda Kardi’, ‘Piya’ and ‘Winds of Rajasthan’ (for Times Music released in early 2004) have brought out the versatility in Richa’s voice.
