Bhubaneswar, July 28: With water of many major rivers such as Baitarani, Subarnarekha and Jalaka flowing above danger marks, the state government Tuesday sounded an alert in flood prone districts, especially Jajpur, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj.
Water resources secretary PK Jena said water level of rivers at Anandapur and Akhuapada has crossed danger marks and in view of the flood like situation, the local administration was kept on high alert. He said there may also be a rise in water level in Budhabalanga.
Jena said flood water of Brahmani will be released through Rengali dam Wednesday. He urged people not to panic but to remain alert. Incessant rain in last couple of days led to floods in Keonjhar, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj even as Baitarani and Genguti reportedly crossed danger mark. One person was swept away in Bangiriposi of Mayurbhanj while 50 houses have reportedly collapsed.
Most parts of Dhamnagar block in Bhadrak were flooded as water levels in rivers like Kochila, Genguti, Reb and Kapali are rising towards danger marks. Higher reaches of the rivers continue to receive heavy influx of rainwater causing rivers to swell.
Floodwaters from Baitarani entered Malimalhar and Gourangpur after midnight Monday. Water is entering these two vulnerable areas through two outlets flooding Anandapur, Khadipada, Karada, Sohada, Dalanga, Padhani, Arjunpur, Nadigaon, Kothar, Dhusuri, Kasimpur, Bamkura and other areas.
