We have all heard of mass evacuation of humans but have you ever heard of mass evacuation of skeletons?
Well, archaeologists have excavated 6,500 skeletons from a 19th-Century burial ground in Birmingham, United Kingdom, to make way for an HS2 high speed rail station.
There are more than 60,000 dead bodies in this cemetery which are being removed. According to officials, this is to make way for the new high speed railway between London and Birmingham.
This is why this cemetery has been excavated. Machines have been used to remove the topsoil, stopping once coffins or human remains are exposed. Archaeologists then carry out further excavation by hand.
With tens of thousands of skeletons to be removed, protests and a memorial service have been held at the site where people were laid to rest from 1790 to 1853.
No bodies were being buried in this 209-year-old cemetery for the last 46 years. After the announcement of the construction of the railway station, the team of archaeologists dug in which they found sculptures, coins, toys, precious necklaces and many artifacts. The Birmingham local administration says the remains will be buried elsewhere after consulting a church.
