Come what may sportspersons live a disciplined life. Proper diet, timely training and most importantly recovery are the essential aspects that one needs to take care of in order to be in proper shape throughout the season. But when it comes to Durga puja (as it is celebrated in the east while it is Navaratri in the north and west), even top athletes take breaks and that, sometimes rejuvenate them. Like everyone, these athletes too drift away from the strict schedule and celebrate those five days to the fullest. Having said that, everyone celebrates festivals in their ways, the athletes are no different. Orissa POST spoke with some of them to get a glimpse of how they spend their festival time...

It’s a bit different this year as I am recuperating from an injury which happened few months back. I am at my home in Cuttack and undergoing rehab because I need to attain fitness as soon as possible for the National Games in November. In terms of diet, I am keeping myself away from the junk food, but if I get time I will go for some pandal hopping along with my family and friends.

Pratyasha Ray (Swimming)

I have no such plans to go for pandal hopping this time as my sole focus is on the National Games in November. So, I am training six hours a day and want to be in best shape ahead of the tourney. However, my birthday falls on Bijaya Dashami (October 8) and I will spend that day with my family and friends.

Shilanand Lakra (Hockey)

It’s all about game, game and game this time as I will be flying to Malaysia for the Sultan of Johor Cup starting October 12. The preparations have been great and we hope to win the title. If time permits, I will go out to nearby pandals to see the idols.

Dutee Chand (Track & Fields)

I am lucky this time that I got a chance to spend this Durga puja at home. I just came back from two big tournaments and now want to enjoy this occasion with my family and friends. There are some plans to visit Cuttack as it is famous for the Durga puja. Training will go on as per schedule and in terms of diet, I have to make sure that I don’t eat non-vegetarian foods in excess.

Pramod Bhagat (Para Badminton)

For me, the Durga puja is one of those occasions where I free myself from the game. I have already come to my home in Bargarh, and will spend these five days with family and friends and enjoy a lot seeking blessings from the goddess. In terms of diet, I become extra cautious not to gain weight, rather I do fasting.

Kabir Hans (Tennis)

Honestly, I have never celebrated Durga puja and this time also not sure since I have class 12 half-yearly exams starting October 14. If I get time I will plan to visit some of the pandals. In terms of diet, I prefer to stick to my staple diet, but sometimes forced to take non-veg too. As far as my training schedule is concerned, I will be practising an hour in the morning and an hour for gym in the evening. The rest I have to study mostly.
