Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now planned to train and sensitise the citizens on ways to convert their kitchen garbage into compost.
The urban local body, from Saturday, embarked on their journey to reach out to the people in the city to train and demonstrate before them the technology of barrel composting where compost is made out of garbage.
The BMC launched the drive Saturday with senior officials and technology experts. The team approached the residences of some of the senior government officials in the state and apprised them about the new technology which could be self sustaining.
The corporation believes that with this technology the overall quantity of garbage from households could be reduced and also it could be processed at households for a better purpose. The body now plans to ensure that some portion of the biodegradable garbage created at houses could be targeted for composting.
In the maiden drive which started in the city, the BMC officials distributed leaflets to the households and also did live demonstrations of the technology called ‘barrel composting’.
The residents were sensitised on how the practice will help reduce volume of garbage in the city and in what way it is a social, financial, behavioural and eco-friendly habit.The initiative will be promoted among the citizens to make the city participate in the sanitation process,” said Suvendu Sahoo, Deputy Commissioner, Sanitation.
According to the experts at BMC who deal with barrel composting, kitchen items like fruits, flowers, rice, bread and other biodegradable waste are put in a barrel for composting. The compost can be later used to promote plant growth in nurseries, gardens and local areas.
The technology uses non-chlorinated water, rubber, plastic pipe, curd, jaggery, rice bran, husk and other easily available items to make the barrel compost at the household level.
The BMC thinks that the drive which was launched under the flagship programme of ‘Mu Safaiwala’ will ensure better sanitation in the Smart City, lesser production of biodegradable waste and also better usage of discarded kitchen items for utilitarian purposes.
