One may not be a singer, but it does not mean that music does not play any role in his/her life. Many people are of the opinion that music is deeply rooted to their lives. Many people find many songs related to memorable incidents in their lives. Youngsters these days always have their earphones plugged in the proper places in offices, hospitals and public places and also dangerously while driving or crossing the road. Anyway, music, it is hard to deny, plays a role – however minor – in our lives.
Orissa POST asks youngsters about the role of music in their lives.
Ipsita Mohapatra is an AIPMT aspirant. She stays in a hostel in Bhubaneswar preparing for the pre-medical test. When asked about the role of music in her life she said, “I am busy with my studies. I need to prepare for the medical entrance. But I can’t study continuously and music is my saviour. I study for about one hour and then start listening to music. It relaxes and refreshes me. After listening to three to four songs I feel recharged to study for another hour or two. This way it also becomes easy for me to remember things I read. Besides, during occasions I love dancing to the tunes of film songs with my friends. A friends’ party is not complete without music.”
“I take care of my elder brother’s jewellery shop in his absence. Sometimes there’s rush in the shop while at others we sit idle. It is on these occasions that I satisfy my thirst for music. I may not be a professional singer but I record my voice in my cell phone and share it with my close friends. I have been appreciated for my effort. In a party I always take charge of the music department. My family members feel comfortable with my choice of music. And you must know, in our families (he means Marwadi families) music sittings are inalienable part of marriages. I enjoy playing music on different occasions,” said Abhishek Soni from Bolangir.
Although Ankita Panigrahi hails from Bargarh she is pursuing her MCA in Bhubaneswar and lives in a hostel in the city. She said, “There is no life without music. I am a hardcore music lover. I mostly like old Hindi film songs. I am a fan of music since the good old days of radio. In my childhood I used to sing in Sai Bhajan. Later, I tried to sing with a band. But I felt I am not gifted enough to sing with accompanying music. Besides songs, I also love instruments and amongst them piano is my favourite. Based on my listening experience I can say that a certain instrument plays the same music in different styles.”
Rana Sangram is a software engineer based in Bhubaneswar. He has recently started his professional life. He said, “I get emotional listening to certain songs. Like the song Tujhse naraj nehin jindegi hairan hun mein from the film Masoom is a memorable one for me. When I was a child my mom used to hum it while in the kitchen. I listened to the song from my study room. Once I was sick and was bedridden for a few days. I used to ask mom to sing the song for me and she did. Thus, now whenever in a public place I hear the song, I stop awhile and remember those old days. I also listen to songs from Sambalpur Radio station.”
