Bhubaneswar, August 8: The 28th Convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Open University, Regional Centre, was held at the conference hall of the Institute of Engineers, here, Saturday.
Around 400 students were felicitated with certificates for successfully completing their courses from IGNOU.
Exhorting the students to become a responsible citizen, Ravenshaw University vice chancellor, prof. Prakash Chandara Sarangi, said, “Each one of us, who is christened as ‘educated’ has to bear a special responsibility. Think about others as well and extend a helping hand to the people around you. It is not always necessary that you have to get involved in a social service. If you can inculcate the right spirit of education among your family members, that is enough.”
Lamenting about the education system at the school level, he said, “The challenge for a teacher is to be able to make the students confidently read and write on their subjects. If there is no impact of the first twelve years of the education on a student, what can a higher education institution do in three years? The President of India, in his speech at the Rameswar High School in the state, lamented that not a single university in India was ‘world class’. But I want to know, how can you make a university world class if we have to teach the students how to write sentences at the BA level?”
Presenting the annual report of the Regional Centre, the regional director, Dr Abhilash Nayak, informed the people present the various achievements of the centre in the past one year. “In recognition of the quality of the student support service, the Regional Centre has been nominated for the award of Letter of Appreciation by the University authorities,” he said. Later prof Sarangi gave away the degrees to the students.
