Saintala, August 16: A married woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a paddy field near Siletpada here in Bolangir district while a man was found lying unconscious near the body Saturday.
Police seized the body of Sebati Majhi (25) of Dungapata under M Rampur police limits in Kalahandi and rescued the man Nilambar Bhoi (35) of Mahagaon under Kesinga police limits. Police interrogated Nilambar, who allegedly had an illicit affair with Sebati.
Titlagarh SDPO Dilip Purohit, local police station IIC Jatindra Das and other officials went to the spot and started an investigation after Sebati’s family members lodged a complaint of murder. Police registered a case and sent the body to Bolangir for post-mortem.
According to sources, Sebati had married a man of Mahagaon village a few years ago and the couple has two children. However, she developed an illicit affair with Nilambar, a father of three children.
Sources said Sebati had frequent arguments with her husband after the latter came to know about the illicit relationship. The woman lodged a complaint against her husband at M Rampur police station last year following which the couple started living separately.
Sebati lived at her father’s house at Dungapata, where Nilambar used to meet her frequently.
Sources said residents of Dungapata caught Sebati and Nilambar in a compromising position in a field Wednesday night and took them to M Rampur police station. As the villagers and Sebati insisted on marriage, Nilambar promised in writing to accept her as his wife, said a source in police department.
However, the matter did not go down well with Nilambar’s wife as she and her mother-in-law lodged a complaint against him at Palam police outpost Friday.
Nilambar told the police that when he was asleep with Sebati in a primary school in Siletpada Friday night, six masked youths forcibly took them to a secluded place. Four of them raped Sebati while the others thrashed him before he lost his consciousness, Nilambar told the investigators.
After preliminary investigation, police rejected the theory of rape as claimed by Nilambar. The mystery surrounding Sebati’s death would unravel after post-mortem, said the IIC.
