Danda Hati (32) was killed 45 days ago. But, police recovered the skull and other skeletal remains from the bush in Lochapada Dhoba nullah Sunday and arrested four persons including Danda’s sister and brother-in-law.

The accused were Jayanti Choudhury (sister), Lakshman Choudhury alias Dhoba (brother-in-law), Vicky Das and Rocky Das. The incident has spread shockwaves in the town.

A minor boy, involved in the crime, was detained by police. A crowbar, lathis and a napkin used in the killing were also seized. A case was registered and further investigation is on.

Police said Danda had a long-standing dispute with Jayanti and Lakshman. Danda and the couple had several fights in the past and Danda was even arrested for assaulting Jayanti on various occasions. The assaults incensed Jayanti to such an extent that she started nursing a grudge against her brother and finally decided to eliminate him.

To give shape to her plan, she and her husband sought the help of Vicky, Rocky and a minor living in Harijan Sahi and offered them money and liquor for the work. Danda, though married, was having an affair with another girl Anita Pradhan of Lochapada Ramakrushna Nagar and used to visit her regularly.

The incident occurred when Danda visited Anita’s house July 24. On being tipped off, Jayanti, Lakhsman, Vicky, Rocky and the minor had a talk on their plan and left for Anita’s house. They waited till 12 am and knocked at the door of Anita’s house. As Danda opened the door, Jayanti sprinkled chilli powder on his eyes.

As Danda yelled in pain rubbing his eyes, Lakhsman hit his head with a crowbar while the three beat him up with lathis. Profusely bleeding Danda died on the spot.  Anita came rushing on hearing Danda’s scream but the assailants threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter before anybody.  Later, the accused washed the bloodstains and dumped the body in a bush.

Danda’s widow, Suchitra Hati, lodged a complaint of missing after two days.  During investigation, police came to know about Danda’s relationship with Anita. She was called for interrogation where she revealed the murder. Police then arrested Vicky, Rocky and the minor who confessed to the crime. Following this, the couple was arrested and skeletal remains seized.
