Bhubaneswar, Jan 30: International Master Swayams Mishra of Orissa emerged as the sole leader with five points after the fifth round of Siddha Chess for youth championship at Kolkata Saturday.
On an eventful day, Mishra won all three of his rounds comfortably to sit atop the table with five points. Playing white, Mishra outwitted young and talented youngster Mitrabha Guha in 24 moves in a Nimzo Indian defence to secure his third win.
Earlier in the day, he had beaten Sukanya Dutta, while Deborshi Mukherjee had put up spirited resistance against Mishra but only to go down in 29 moves.
Top seed GM Debashis Das of Orissa also posted three straight wins after Friday’s defeat to bounce back into reckoning with four points.
He had little difficulty in getting the better of H Venkatesh and Dipanjan Choudhury in the third and fourth rounds respectively, while in the fifth round he outwitted Arpan Das. He will face Kaustav Kundu in the penultimate round.
Padmini wins
WGM Padmini Rout of Orissa defeated Paulo Pinho in a fourth round match of the Gibraltar Chess Festival at Gibraltar, Saturday. Padmini now has three points in her kitty. Former World Champion Viswanthan Anand was held to a draw by Russian Grandmaster Grigoriy Oparin. Starting off with a draw and two successive victories, this was Anand’s second draw in the tournament that took the Indian ace to three points.
