Cuttack: The special task force (STF) of crime branch (CB) police has decided to bring on remand to the state suspected Al-Qaeda terrorist Abdur Rehman, who was arrested by Delhi police from Paschimakuchh under Jagatpur police limit December 15 last year.
CB sources said Rehman was in touch with the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan and might have passed some important information on the security establishments of the country and state to it.
“We will bring Rehman on a 15-day remand to get a clear picture on his relation with ISI and Al-Qaeda. Till now, we have information that Rehman had links with a few extremists in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Dubai and London,” crime branch special director general of police Bijay Kumar Sharma said.
Sources said the crime branch will apply for a transit remand to bring Rehman from Delhi in the court of Salipur judicial magistrate first class (JMFC).
Rehman was running a seminary at Bilaternua near Tangi and allegedly imparting training on jihad to a few boys from the state and neighbouring Jharkhand. CB sources claimed that Rehman had sent a few of his students to Waziristan in Pakistan for advanced terrorist training.
“Rehman has confessed that he had sent at least two students from his seminary to Waziristan. Besides, some unknown persons in London had transferred money to Rehman’s account last year,” said a CB officer.
Police had seized a lot of jihadi literature, CDs, passport and advanced electronic gadgets, including a tablet, from Rehman’s seminary.
Crime Branch sources said Rehman was in charge of Al-Qaeda affairs for states, including Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. “Jharkhand police has already interrogated Rehman after taking him on remand. We hope to get some vital clues regarding the networks of Al-Qaeda and ISI by interrogating Rehman,” Sharma said.
