Bhubaneswar: Severe heatwave conditions continued to prevail in parts of the state with temperature at western Orissa town of Titilagarh reaching 47.5°C Friday. Alleged sunstroke cases in the state also went up to 73 causing concern for the state government.
“Met sources said 15 districts have recorded a maximum temperature of 40°C and nine districts above 44°C. The highest temperature of 47.5°C has been recorded at Titilagarh in Bolangir district,” special relief commissioner’s office said. The town also recorded 47°C Thursday.
Mercury in Sonepur town touched 46.3°C, Sundargarh 46°C, Bolangir 46°C, Angul 45.5°C, Hirakud 45.5°C, Sambalpur 45.2°C and Jharsuguda 44.8°C. Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 40.5°C.
“Heatwave conditions continued to prevail at most places over Interior Orissa and at one or two places over coastal Orissa with severe heatwave conditions at one or two places in the interior parts,” Met officials said.
Met director SC Sahu said, “Heatwave conditions may prevail over many parts of Orissa and the severity would be felt at one or two places in the next 48 hours.”
Meanwhile, the SRC’s office has indicated that seven cases of deaths due to alleged heatstroke were reported Friday. “So far, we have received complaints of ailment from 73 persons due sun-stroke.
On enquiry, death in two cases has been attributed to sunstroke. In 22 cases, the death has occurred due to other reasons. The remaining 49 cases are under scrutiny,” said special relief commissioner PK Mohapatra.
Meanwhile, 520 tankers have been engaged and 1067 syntex tanks placed at major locations to meet water requirement in urban areas, He indicated. For rural areas, he said 518 tankers have been engaged for supply of water in some areas. Besides, 734 mobile vans have been deployed for taking up repair of defunct tube wells in rural areas.
