Sorada: Forest officials rescued a two-year-old sick elephant calf abandoned by a herd about 1.5 km from Gajalbadi under Sorada forest division in Ganjam district and started its treatment.
The calf was part of a 22-member herd but was abandoned after it fell sick in the morning. Villagers noticing the calf lying and tried to revive it by giving it water to drink. The villagers also tried to cover it from the scorching heat by putting leaves on its body and informed forest officials.
A team of forest officials and veterinarians led by ranger Kiran Kanta Sahu rushed to the spot and started treatment of the calf. Veterinarians claimed the calf might be suffering from stomach ache as it refused to eat food offered to it. Locals said mindless cutting of trees, lack of food and water in the jungle during summer is leading to gradual shrinking of the elephants’ habitat, resulting in many such elephants getting killed.
