Bhubaneswar, May 4: The state government has urged the Union ministry of human resources development (MHRD) to reintroduce board examinations for students of Class V and VII.
“In response to a letter of HRD minister Smriti Irani, we have submitted our state’s view proposing reintroduction of board exams for Class V and VII. We have sent the response that was formed on the basis of inputs from parents and educationists,” school and mass education minister Debi Prasad Mishra said Wednesday.
Students would face examination similar to the Class X board examination at the primary and upper primary level, he said.
“This will help the students as they will have the experience of sitting for board exams, the minister said.
The implementation of the proposal would mean that all government schools would have the same question papers. It would also mean reintroduction of the pass or fail system, sources said.
Irani had in a letter to Mishra pointed to the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) that is mandatory for all classes from I to VII under the Right to Education Act.
The Union minister had called for the proper implement of this in the state and assured all support from the Centre in this regard.
The state government is implementing both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessment includes basic information on what a child is learning through written or oral work, while summative assessment covers assessment after the completion of a chapter or theme.
The board examinations for classes V and VII were scrapped more than 15 years ago, sources said. Nearly 49,12,000 students are studying at 58,158 primary and upper primary schools across the state.
