Cuttack, June 8: The transport department has identified 41 back spots or accident prone stretches on National Highways (NHs), state highways and major district roads (MDRs) of the district.
This was revealed at a meeting of the district road safety committee recently. Participating in the meeting, regional transport officer (RTO) Dipti Ranjan Patra had blamed the black spots for the rise in road mishaps in the district.
Collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra, who presided over the meeting, has asked transport department officials to detect technical faults in road construction.
Sources said Mishra has directed roads and buildings (R&B) department executive engineer Pramod Kumar Mallick to visit black spots on roads under his jurisdiction and take corrective measures. “We will write to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to undertake corrective measures at black spots on NHs to reduce mishaps,” Mishra said.
According to sources, the district administration has asked the NHAI to install boards along the NHs depicting speed limits to prevent mishaps. The administration has planned to introduce ‘no helmet, no fuel’ system at petrol pumps across the district. “We will soon convene a meeting of the petrol pump owners to deliberate on the new system,” said an official of the district administration.
Sources said the administration has planned to provide 33 breathalysers to 18 police stations and 15 police outposts in rural areas to check drunk driving.
