Bhubaneswar, June 10: After a lull temperature rose in western, southern and coastal Orissa ahead of monsoon as mercury rose in all parts of the state and seven places recorded a temperature above 40° Celsius Friday.
According to Met bulletin issued here, Hirakud was the hottest in the state recording 42.9° Celsius, followed by Bolangir (42° Celsius).
Similarly, Sambalpur sizzled at 41.8° C while the temperature in Bhawanipatna stood at 41.5° C. The temperature at Jharsuguda, Titilagarh and Sundargarh were 41.4° C, 40.5° C and 40° C respectively, it said. There was no rain in any major towns during the day, Friday.
The denizens of Bhubaneswar reeled under heat-wave like condition as the temperature rose from 34.9° C to 38.2° C with humidity standing at 87 per cent. The temperature of Cuttack also increased from 34.5° C to 38.5° C. Both the cities received rainfall during the day.
Some parts of the state have however, received rainfall. While 38 mm rainfall was recorded at Keonjhar, Angul received 17 mm rainfall, followed by 15 mm rainfall at Balasore and Chandbali, an IMD report said.
IMD predicted rain and thunder shower in southern and interior parts of Orissa. It had earlier predicted that monsoon would hit Orissa in the second week of June.
Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Sarat Chandra Sahu said, “The temperature will remain similar Saturday. However, it will come down after that.”
However, the exact date of commencement of monsoon cannot be predicted due to erratic weather condition. But, it will strike the state within four to five days, Sahu said.
