Khandapara: A local court Saturday awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to two youths for raping a 14-year-old girl and then uploading her obscene video in social media at Itamati village in Nayagarh district. The accused were identified as Shyam Sundar Rout and Sourav Bisoyi.
Nayagarh special track court awarded the sentence and imposed a penalty of `1.23 lakh on the duo. The court awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on Sourabh and imposed penalty of `75,000. He would undergo an additional 10-month jail-term, if he fails to deposit the amount, the court declared. Similarly, Shyam Sundar was awarded a 10-year of jail and a penalty of `48,000. He would undergo an additional one-year three-month jail upon failure to deposit the amount.
The court ordered the penalty amount to be handed over to the victim’s family.
According to the case diary, Sourabh and Shyam raped the minor girl and recorded the video in their mobile phones. They threatened the girl with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone. Later, they started blackmailing the girl’s father and demanded `10 lakh. The duo threatened to circulate the video by uploading it on social media.
The girl’s father expressed inability to pay the amount and pleaded with the two to delete the video. Later, he lodged a written complaint after the accused uploaded the video in social media. Police registered a case and arrested the two accused. They were later produced in court.
The court awarded the jail-term after examining the statements of 21 witnesses in the case. PNN
