Baripada/Thakurmunda: Incessant rain over last two days has created a flood situation in parts of Mayurbhanj district with river Deo swelling alarmingly Tuesday.
Floodwaters from the river are flowing two ft above a road at Udala Adapal Chhak, disrupting communication between Udala, Baripada and Balasore.
Thousands of buses, trucks and other means of communication have been lying stranded on both sides of the road.
According to sources, heavy downpour in upland area of Similipal led to floods in river Deo. A bridge is likely to be washed away if floodwaters do not recede, it was learnt.
The bridge was washed away during cyclonic storm Phailin in 2013. Construction of a new bridge is underway at the place. To facilitate communication, a makeshift bridge has been built as a stopgap measure.
Floodwaters reportedly entered riparian village Nuagaon leading to collapse of walls of five houses.
Emergency officer and deputy collector Dayasindhu Parida said Udala sub-collector is monitoring the flood situation. No casualties were reported from any part, he added.
Meanwhile, reports from Thakurmunda said vehicular movement on Thakurmunda-Anandapur main road was disrupted as a culvert and an approach road built across Tendra creek were washed away by gushing waters fuelled by heavy downpour since Monday night.
This has led to commuting problems in the area. Buses and other means of transport have remained stranded on both sides of the road.
People depend on this road, as the expansion work for the 40-km stretch of Thakurmunda-Anandapur road is in progress.
Thakurmunda recorded 102 mm rainfall Monday, swelling the creek to overflow.
Vehicular movement was reportedly diverted via Chianbeda Chhak and Mahuldiha Chhak. PNN
