Bhubaneswar, July 28: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2016. It has asked affiliated schools to encourage students to participate. The event will be held in Delhi and 400 teams from around the world are expected to participate.
A Regional Robotics Competition will be held in September and a National Robotics Championship in October before the International Robotics Championship in November.
The event is being jointly organized by India STEM Foundation (ISF), National Council of Science Museums, and Union Ministry of Culture with the objective of building scientific temper and 21st century skills among students.
It is expected to give Indian students an opportunity to compete with international teams and to meet with robotics experts from around the world.
WRO will have competitions in four categories — Regular, Open, WRO Football and Advanced Robotics Challenge. A team is allowed to participate only in one category and competitors are also divided into age based categories Under 12, 13 – 15, 16 – 19, and 10 – 19 . The Advanced Robotics Challenge will be open to competitors of the 17 – 25 age group.
The board has suggested guidelines for the coaches of teams.
“The minimum age of a coach in an international WRO tournament is 20 at the time of registration for the WRO final. Coaches may work with more than one team; however, each team needs to be assisted by a responsible adult. … During the actual Olympiad, all work and preparation must be performed by the student members of the team,” the circular added.
