Berhampur: Classes in the newly-established Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) here will start from this week even as students selected during a national-level counselling programme registered their names Monday.
Over 60 students have been selected during the counselling. While some of them registered their names Monday others are expected to register Tuesday.
Ishita Ganguly of Kolkata and Aditya Prasad from Cuttack were the first to register their names.
The news about commencement of classes at the premier institution has spread cheers among local residents. Members of a voluntary outfit ‘Forum for Ganjam’ visited the government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) which will be the temporary campus of IISER and welcomed the students by distributing sweets among them.
The temporary campus has been well furnished with necessary infrastructure for holding classes, it was learnt.
While the girl students will be provided hostel facilities on the premises of government polytechnic, arrangements for accommodation of boys have been made at a private apartment.
In the temporary campus, a well equipped laboratory and library have been set up. Professors, assistant professors and non-teaching staff have been appointed for proper functioning of the institution.
“The temporary campus has all facilities for first year’s study in IISER,” principal of government ITI Dr Rajat Kumar Panigrahi said.
Berhampur IISER will now function under the supervision of the director of Bhopal-based IISER.
A permanent campus will be constructed at Laudigaon under Rangeilunda block in the district for which over 200 acre of government land has been identified and work has started at the site. The Central Public Works Department will supervise the construction of the permanent campus.
In view of the establishment of the permanent campus, work on the renovation and expansion of the Rangeilunda airstrip has also begun. PNN
