Bhubaneswar, August 12: Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) had a surprise in store for visitors on World Elephant Day Friday. Besides giving elephants some special treatment, the zoo authorities released hand-reared lioness Kalpana into her enclosure for the first time.
NZP also organised various competitions and a cycle rally as part of the celebration. Principal chief conservator of forests Sidhanta Das, who was the chief guest, flagged off the rally from Nandankanan to Godavari.
“We dressed the elephants up for the day. Schoolchildren, teachers, members of NGOs and other officials fed the animals,” NZP deputy director Jayanta Kumar Das said.
