Amarpali: Archaeological remains pertaining to several ancient civilisations, human settlements and temples are lying undiscovered below the ground in various parts of Subarnapur district. However, due to lack of administrative support, such ancient treasures are not seeing the light of the day, experts said. There is need for conducting archeological explorations in those areas along the Mahanadi river, they added.
Sources informed that the former Professor of the History department of Sambalpur University, Pradip Kumar Behera had successfully carried out archeological explorations at Kumkursingha near Birmaharajpur and Karamapadar in Boudh district in 2008. Carbon dating of the articles, artifacts and potshards excavated from the sites has been conducted by experts of Kiel University in Germany. Carbon dating has proved that civilisations had flourished for over 1,600 years at different places along the Mahanadi river between 800 BC and 800 AD.
However, beyond this nothing much is not known about the people who were a part of the civilisation including their lifestyle, culture, belief, rituals, food habits and fashion sense. Hence, there is a need for exploration and research on these aspects to discover the remains and give people an insight into the past civilisations. If such remains are found, they will certainly highlight the rich heritage of India, experts opined.
Meanwhile, efforts are being made by the district administration and Koshala Sahitya Sanskruti Academy to carry out excavations at Kapasira on the banks Mahandi river. This was stated by Professor Behera and general secretary of the Koshala Sahitya Sanskruti Academy, Gorokhanath Sahu.
