Bhubaneswar: SUM Hospital landed in more trouble Thursday after relatives of patients admitted before the fire tragedy October 17 accused its officials of being unsympathetic and unruly, and lodged complaints with Khandagiri police.
One such relative Ranjit Behera said that his uncle Gopal Chandra Dalei was admitted to SUM Hospital due to a blood clot in his brain.
“My uncle was admitted in ICU at SUM Hospital. But after the fire at SUM October 17 evening, he was shifted to another private hospital. We were supposed to get at least `15,000 back from the hospital from the payment we had made. But when I went to SUM Hospital October 19, its public relation officer and its bouncers misbehaved with me,” Ranjit alleged.
“Though SUM Hospital had promised free treatment of patients who were shifted from there to other hospitals after the fire mishap, but its officials are now not keen on it. SUM’s authorities didn’t even consider my request to refund our pending money. I want action against the private security guards and the public relation officer of the hospital,” he told Orissa POST.
Another woman named Kamala Jena of Buddheswari Colony also lodged a complaint with Khandagiri police against SUM authorities alleging that they took several lakhs from her for the treatment of her son Binan Jena despite she having a Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna card.
“My son had met with a serious accident several months back. He was undergoing treatment and we spent several lakhs. The hospital authorities did not accept our Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna card,” Jena said.
She claimed Binan was operated upon at least twice in the hospital and she paid around `8 lakh. “But SUM demanded `5 lakh more for further treatment and so we shifted him to a government hospital. We went to SUM recently for my son’s treatment but they again demanded `3,000. When I told them that I do not have the money, they refused to treat my son,” she added.
Meanwhile, Khandagiri police station inspector-in-charge Sarat Kumar Sahu said they are examining the complaints and will take action accordingly.
