Chhendipada/Jamankira/Bamra, Jan 14: Two persons were killed and three were rendered critical after a luxury vehicle they were travelling in met with a road mishap near Kumarsingh village on National Highway-55 under Jarpada police limits in Angul district late Tuesday night. In two other mishaps in Jamankira and Bamra in Sambalpur district, at least four persons died and as many persons sustained injury Wednesday.
In the Chhendipada mishap, the victims were identified as Tapan Kumar Patra (40) of Chadheipali village under Belguntha police limits in Ganjam district and Ramesh Chandra Gahan (32) of Kaitha Gunisahi village under Mahanga police limits in Cuttack district. Both were employees of Jindal-owned steel plant in Angul and were on their way to Sambalpur for picnic with three other injured members.
The mishap occurred when the Mahindra Xylo vehicle lost its balance and hit a roadside tree while negotiating a sharp curve near Kumarsingh village on the highway. Informed, Jarpada police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured persons trapped inside the vehicle and sent them in a special ambulance to the district headquarters hospital in Angul.
Meanwhile, two persons, Arun Bhanj (30) and Anantaram Behera (60) died after their vehicle was hit by a private bus near a bridge between Bhojpur and Tablakata villages under Kuchinda block of Sambalpur district. Similarly, Sunil Lakra (30) and Surya Lakra (23) died after their motorcycle hit a tree near Turkijor along Bamra-Gariamal PWD road while negotiating a turn Wednesday. Sujit Singh (28), Prabin Sahu (28), Santosh Pragania (60) and Anil Lakra (25) suffered serious injuries in the two mishaps and were undergoing treatment.
