Bhubaneswar, Jan 15: An army of workers are busy sprucing up the city ahead of the 75th annual session of the Indian Roads Congress, the national body of highway engineers, to be held in the city from
January 18 to 22.
The Vani Vihar-Rajmahal stretch via Master Canteen, one of the prominent stretches of the city, has been spruced up.
The Master Canteen Square, which is usually cluttered with hoardings, cut-outs, banners and flexes, has been transformed into a beautiful traffic intersection to woo the IRC delegation.
The public works department (PWD) and the several other agencies involved are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that IRC is conducted in a smooth manner in beautiful environs, especially as Chief Secretary GC Pati is directly involved in the preparations for the event, according to sources.
Railings of road medians have been painted white. This is evident from Kalpana Square to Vani Vihar via Master Canteen, Rajmahal Square, Janpath, Kharvel Nagar, AG Square, Jaydev Vihar, Bidyut Marg and Acharya Vihar, as well as many other thoroughfares.
Several tree guards protecting trees on the Master Canteen-Sriya Square stretch have been removed to paint them in uniform colour, while footpaths are also being repaired.
Besides, a night sweeping truck has also pressed into service to clean the important streets mechanically before the commencement of IRC’s annual session, during which hundreds of delegates would turn up in the city.
Around 4,000 delegates, including 3,000 from other states, are expected to participate in the event. Nearly six technical sessions, one business session and one council meeting has been scheduled on different dates of the event, which will spread over five days.
Experts will deliver lectures on subjects such as road safety, use of fly ash and waste material in road construction, road planning designs, mitigation of permanent trouble spots on roads and road research.
