Evergreen hoop earrings keep rotating on the fashion cycle and reappear every now and then in the trendiest of avatars…
As a fashion accessory meant to be sported by both men and women, thanks to its simple design, the hoop earring is favoured by all. More important, it gels with everyday wear, and like the little black dress can never go out of fashion. Of all the accessories a woman can own, the hoop earring is one of the most loved.
During the 1990s, for the first time hoop earrings debuted on the fashion platform and remained in the limelight for a couple of years. Subsequently, it gave way to fashionable and trendy earring designs. Hoop earrings are making a comeback with designers Irene Neuwirth and Aurélie Bidermann who are all set to re-launch the fashion in a new avatar.
Fashion designer and stylist Debasmita Giri says the hoop earring, which can be traced back to ancient Egypt, is designed in circular or semi-circular patterns. Although the hoop earring has a simple design, there are different types to choose from. Amongst the designs to choose from are fancy, diamond cut, classic, endless, square tube, satin and twisted.
Today, however, the hoop earring, which has come a long way since its first appearance, no longer resembles the designs of the past. Over the years, the journey of the hoop earring has been a roller-coaster one; it ruled the fashion scene from the 1960s through to the 90s, after which its appeal mellowed down a bit.
The hoop earring is simple yet elegant. Whether you are a tad gaudily dressed, or a shade or two mute, it suits all moods. Our favourite celebrities such as Halle Berry, Hilary Duff, Beyonce Knowles, Demi Moore, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian have exuded chic in the earring.
Mostly, women with short or pixie haircuts love hoop earrings; but if you love long hair make sure you pull it back tight when donning a hoop earring.
Debasmita says: “The earring can be sported as a standalone statement piece, and can also be paired with other earpieces to impart a bohemian look. Metal hoop earrings are often accessorised with formal attires these days.”
Hoop earrings studded with bling diamonds accessorised with gowns and other party wear are drool-worthy. These earrings are best matched with cotton Ikat saris and khadi kurtis.
“As a fashion designer and stylish my personal style statement would-be a simple metal earlobe-hugging hoop earring complemented with heavy eyebrow and mascara with firmly pulled back hair and a LBD. That’s all you need to make heads turn,” says the designer.
Hoop earrings can be casual, formal and contemporary so they are, in a sense, evergreen, and keep rotating on the fashion cycle and reappears every now and them in the trendiest of avatars.
