Bhubaneswar: The state government has asked executive engineers (roads and buildings) of all districts to conduct a survey for the four-laning of subdivisional main roads in the state. They are required to submit a report in this regard by January 15.
An official of the works department said 44 executive engineers of the department will be conducting the survey. It will be done with support from officials of local administrations and superintending engineers.
The move follows Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s direction in this regard in the third week of December. According to government sources, the present road network of the state comprises 4,844 km of national highways, 4,128 km of state highways (SHs), 2,598 km of major district roads (MDRs) and 13,769 km of other district roads (ODRs). Seventy-three per cent of ODRs, 51 per cent of MDRs and 47 per cent SHs are currently single-lane.
The works department official said the state has chalked out a strategic framework to widen roads under which 5,000 km will be double-laned between 2017-18 and 2023-24; of this, double-laning of the first 2,000 km will be done between 2017-18 and 2019-20.
According to the official, the state has 58 road subdivisions of which highest number were in Angul and Mayurbhanj districts.
