Bhubaneswar: The state government has initiated a process to bring geographical indication (GI) status for the famous filigree work of Cuttack.
The handicrafts department is collecting detailed information on filigree work from eminent artisans to file an application in this regard to the Centre. Sources said government officials are keen to know the history of filigree work in state.
“Steps are being taken to ascertain whether filigree work of any other state has been accorded GI tag. The state government has planned to submit an application seeking GI status for filigree work of Cuttack to the Centre within six months,” said a source in handicrafts department.
Jewellers from Cuttack have won laurels from across the globe for their unique skills in filigree works from silver wires. According to sources, they have displayed expertise in preparing idols and figurines of animals and birds.
According to sources, artisans in Cuttack and its nearby areas have opted filigree works to earn their livelihood. Tourists from across the world visit the Silver City to observe the traditional art.
“Filigree work has been prevalent in Cuttack for many years. Hundreds of artisan families in Cuttack have contributed towards popularising filigree work. There is every possibility that the traditional art will get GI status,” said artisan Ganesh Gundu.
Sources said the handicrafts department had convened a high-level meeting recently to compile data on filigree work.
“A preliminary report has been sent to the Centre urging it to consider GI tag for filigree work of Cuttack. We are planning to invite a Central team to apprise them of various information on the traditional art,” said an official of the handicrafts department.
Stone carving of Konark, Pattachitra of Raghurajpur, appliqué work of Pipli, Pata sarees of Berhampur, Bandha sarees of Sambalpur and handmade garments of Kotpad have already received GI tags.
