Lakhanpur: In a horrific incident, two college-going sisters and a boy impersonating themselves as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswar danced on the chest of their friend driven by superstition leading to her death Friday. The incident was reported from Bijapali village under Rengali police limits in Jharsuguda district.
The victim has been identified as Sanjukta Jayapuria (17). On being informed, Brajarajnagar SDPO Nrupa Charan Dandsena and Rengali IIC Pratap Rana along with a scientific team from Jharsuguda reached the village and launched an investigation.
The girl’s body was seized and sent for post-mortem. The police also detained two sisters Santoshini Jayapuria (18) and Soudamini Jayapuria (17) along with their father, mother and brother for interrogation.
The girls during police interrogation claimed that they were possessed by Brahma and Vishnu and that was why they stamped their friend leading to her death. Meanwhile, another college boy involved in the incident was on the run. Police identified him as Naveen Bhoi of Patramal village. Naveen was possessed by Maheswar, the girls said.
Police also seized a trishul, dambru, puja plates, utensils, bell and other puja items from their possession.
According to sources, many girls and women of the village performed puja in the village. On the fateful day, the girls called Sanjukta for the puja. Initially, they acted as if they were possessed by gods and began to behave unusually. The three attacked Sanjukta and dragged her by her hair.
They undressed the girl and made her lie on the floor and performed a puja by putting flowers, chandan and tulsi on her. Later, the sisters stamped on her chest and danced there.
The girl cried in pain and shouted for help while many such devotees were mere spectators in the scene and did not rescue the girl. Later, the two sisters took a blade and cut her hair and made her bald.
The two girls then took a trishul and hit the girl on her head. Sanjukta lay helpless and cried in pain with blood profusely bleeding from her head with her teeth broken.
Later, Sanjukta’s dress, books and other things were collected and burnt inside a house by the two sisters.
Meanwhile, Sanjukta’s parents who tried to rescue her were also overpowered and held captive. After Sanjukta’s death, the girls and Naveen fled the village and took shelter at a devotee’s house. Acting on a tip-off, police detained the girls, sources said. PNN
