Lanjigarh: Gurudev Majhi, a 35-year-old youth of Tangankana village under this police limits in Kalahandi district, who left for Tamil Nadu five days back to supplement his earning, was found dead on a railway track at Chennai.
On the other hand, there is no word about the other two – Butka Majhi (50) of Tangankana and Khunanja Majhi (40) of Kashibadi – who accompanied him. Gurudev’s death is shrouded in mystery as the mobile phone of labour contractor Niranjan Bag of Kenduguda who lured the three into working in Chennai was found switched off, it was learnt.
Gurudev is survived by his wife Manjula, mother Ambadei and three small daughters.
“I opposed him when he wanted to work in Chennai. I had to give in as he promised to return after making a little money for the family,” Manjula said in tearful eyes.
According to Lanjigarh police, RPF spotted a body at Perambur station near Chennai February 28. With the help of the identity card they learned the address and informed local police Thursday night through WhatsApp which was communicated to Gurudev’s family.
Questions were being raised over the reason of the death of the labourer as other workers who accompanied him and the labour contractor are missing.
Meanwhile, Lanjigarh tehsildar Pitambar Bhoi consoled the family members and handed over Rs 10, 000 to them from the Red Cross funds.
He gave away Rs 2,000 under Harischandra Yojana and promised pension for Gurudev’s widow.
On the other hand, it was decided that the body would be cremated in Chennai since it has already been too late to bring the body to the village. Two persons of the village would leave for Chennai to perform Gurudev’s last rites.
While the administration did its duty by handing over a some money to the bereaved family, questions swirled over the death of Gurudev.
The incident should be probed to find out whether he died falling off the train or someone killed him, some villagers said. Besides, people wanted to know the whereabouts of the other two migrant labourers and the labour contractor, it was learnt. PNN
