Cuttack: Emergency services crippled at SCB Medical College and Hospital here for the third day Wednesday owing to the ongoing agitation by junior doctors over the alleged assault on one of their colleagues by a patient’s attendants Sunday.
Heavy rush of patients and their attendants was witnessed at the outpatient department of SCB Wednesday.
The agitating doctors sought immediate arrest of the attackers, deployment of armed police personnel at the hospital and strict implementation of Orissa Medical Service Protection Act. They asked the hospital authorities to regulate the entry of patients’ attendants to various wards. “We will continue our protest until our demands are met,” said postgraduate doctors’ association president Pritam Kar.
SCB authorities, meanwhile, urged the chief district medical officer to send some doctors from the district headquarters hospital to the premier healthcare institution on deputation. “We have asked all associate and assistant professors to provide emergency healthcare to patients. We hope that patients at anatomy, radiology and pharmacology departments can avail the services of the doctors,” SCB superintendent Shyama Kanungo said.
Sources said relatives of a woman, who died at pulmonary medicine department Sunday, had allegedly assaulted a junior doctor and misbehaved with other staff of the hospital alleging medical negligence in the incident. A complaint in this regard was lodged with Mangalabag police.
Meanwhile, Mangalabag police Tuesday detained the deceased patient’s son in connection with the assault.
