Cuttack: A fortnight has passed since a woman was allegedly abducted from Jagatpur area, but the police have failed to make any headway in the case and are still groping in the dark.
Victim Gitanjali’s husband Subal Kumar Mohanto, a medicine wholesaler in Jagatpur area, Thursday said that he had been tired of making rounds of the police station. However, the police were not paying heed to his plight.
“We have asked for the call detail record (CDR) of Gitanjali. We will carry out further investigation only after receiving the CDR,” Mohanto said quoting the police.
“I have completely lost my faith in the police investigation and am planning to move the women’s commission,” Mohanto added.
Sources said Mohanto, who originally hailed from Patna police limits in Keonjhar district, was living with his wife in a rented accommodation in Jagatpur. His wife Gitanjali went missing March 22. After failing to trace her despite frantic search, Mohanto had lodged a kidnapping complaint with the Jagatpur police.
“Instead of taking action, the police asked me to search for my wife and report them if I failed to trace her. I again approached the police March 25. Although the police received my complaint, they kept silent. They only came forward with casual answers like they had asked for the CDR and further investigation would be done after they received the record,” Mohanto alleged.
Fed up with police inaction, Mohanto lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Police March 29 but in vain. “I have been leading a traumatic life for the past 15 days,” Mohanto said.
Meanwhile, the inaction of the police in this case has drawn criticism from several quarters. Social activist Sarmistharani Nanda said, “The police have completely failed to maintain law and order and provide safety to the people. There is need for a massive reform in the system.”
Advocate Suresh Kumar Panda echoed similar views: “The police often mentally torture the complainants. There is nexus between the police and criminals. Consequently, many criminals are going scot-free. Ensuring safety of people should be the primary responsibility of the police.”
