New Delhi: Boxer Vikas Krishan, who forfeited his semifinal bout in the Asian Championships, won’t be allowed to compete in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) and will have to explain his no-show to a disciplinary committee of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
Vikas had given a walkover to Korean Lee Dongyun in the middleweight (75kg) semifinals in Tashkent, last week. The reasons for his decision were not known at the time of the forfeiture and BFI president Ajay Singh today said there would be an enquiry into the matter.
“He is certainly not going to compete in the World Series of Boxing (WSB). Plus a disciplinary committee of BFI will seek an explanation from him on the matter. He has apparently claimed that he was injured but we have to find out if it is genuine,” Singh said Tuesday.
The Haryana-pugilist was conspicuous by his absence in a breakfast hosted by the BFI president for the team, which returned to the country in the wee hours Tuesday.
“If he wants to meet me, he is welcome, but he will certainly have to explain his actions. A certain discipline needs to be maintained. The disciplinary committee will decide the next course of action,” Singh informed.
Specialised training
The seven Indian boxers, who have qualified for the World Championships, will be put through ‘specialised’ training to prepare them for the August- September showpiece. The training will focus primarily on strength and endurance. Those who have qualified are Shiva Thapa (60kg), Sumit Sangwan (91kg), Amit Phangal (49kg), Vikas Krishan (75kg), Kavinder Singh Bisht (52kg), Manoj Kumar (69kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg).
“The national camp will go ahead as usual but there would be special focus on these seven to prepare them for the World Championships. These seven boxers would be put through rigorous training to improve their endurance and stamina,” Singh informed. “The coaches will chalk out a strategy to ensure that they peak at the right time,” he added.
