Bhubaneswar: Orissa’s Nilsu Pattnayak and Rajesh Nayak were tied third with 6.5 points each after the end of the penultimate round of the nine-round All India FIDE Rating Open Chess Championships at Balasore, Tuesday.
Nilsu got a walkover as his opponent Soham Das of West Bengal didn’t turn up while Rajesh got the better of West Bengal’s Laltu Chattarjee.
Among other state players, Ansuman Samal, who was sharing the joint second position after the end of the seventh round, lost to West Bengal’s Arindam Mukharjee (seven points), which helped the latter to be in sole second place. IM Sayantan Das of West Bengal is currently on top with 7.5 points.
Rakesh Kumar Nayak, Biswajit Nayak and Lochan Kumar Das were the other winners among the state players and all of them are sharing the joint fourth place with Vaibhav Mishra, who played a stalemate with Rupankar Nath, having six points each in their kitty.
Jagannath triumphs
Jagannath Khuntia of Bhubaneswar clinched the ‘Biju Kalinga Shree-2017’ title after winning the state-level Classic Body Building Championships, organised by Kapileswar Youth Club & Gymnasium in cooperation with the Orissa State Body Building Association, here Saturday.
Balakrushna Nag (Bolangir) and Debashis Dutt (Jharsuguda) finished second and third respectively. Earlier, Jagannath was selected for the state level meet after clinching the ‘Mr Bhubaneswar’ title at the District level Body Building Championship here.
Eves enter quarterfinals
Hockey Orissa sailed into the quarterfinals routing Maharashtra 6-2 in a match of the Hockey India Junior Women’s Championships at Bhopal, Tuesday. They will face Jharkhand in their last eight match, May 11.
Elima Minz struck twice while Priyanka Ekka, Asim Kanchan Barla, Mariana Kujur and Bharati Ekka scored one goal each for the Orissa side while Prajyakta Kidgaonkar and Manashri Sej got a couple of consolation goals for Maharashtra .
It was a one-sided game with the Orissa eves dominating from the start of the game.
