Talented and hardworking, young actor Dimple Mohanty has made a seamless
transition from the small to the big screen and looks set to carve out a niche in Oriya filmdom
Dimple Mohanty is somebody who gives the impression of being a private person perfectly capable of handling celebrity status without putting on airs. The actor’s sensuous appeal endears her to all. Dimple’s foray into television was not planned, but she slotted in well into the key role of Gunjan in the mega soap ‘Sahanai’ aired on Tarang channel. Besides, her performance in Chhattisgarhi, Sambalpuri and Bengali movies has earned appreciation. Dimple chats with Orissa POST about her aims and aspirations.
Dimple’s mother is her greatest inspiration. Before embarking on a career in the Oriya television industry, she was offered the heroine’s role in a Chhattisgarhi movie, ‘Ab Meri Bari Hai’. Meanwhile, she appeared in many advertisements and became a popular face on TV. Legendary actor Prashant Nanda first spotted Dimple in Oriya film Kalishankar in which she played the character of actor Arindam’s sister and wanted to cast her in the protagonist’s role in his mega soap ‘Sahanai’.
Asked about her achievements on the small screen, Dimple said: “When Prasant Nanda sir approached me, I didn’t say yes immediately. He liked my innocent face which was the reason why he approached me with a role in the serial. I thought again and again before signing the contract. I was quite busy doing Chhattisgarhi and Bengali movies at that time and I was of the impression that once I started doing serials my career in the film industry would come to an end. ‘Sahanai’ was an unconventional love story in which a boy falls in love with a radio jockey the moment he hears her voice and grows anxious to meet her. The storyline attracted me, apart from the few tracks sung by Sohini Mishra of ‘Indian Idol’ fame. I said yes to the project a day before the commencement of its shooting. Subsequently, I went on to bag TV serial offers such as in ‘Chanda Na Tume Tara’ and ‘Apa’.”
Apart from three to four Chhattisgarhi movies, Dimple has one Oriya film and several advertisements to her credit.
Born to businessman Prakash and beautician Priya Mohanty, Dimple was always interested in acting. Sharing a memorable incident, she said: “I was shooting for a Chhattisgarhi movie in which I had to enact an accident scene. I was supposed to lie down on the ground and succumb to my injuries. It was a blistering hot summer day. I was scared as to how to shoot the scene. Much to my surprise, when my turn came to enact the scene, the fiery sun god suddenly disappeared and a cool breeze started blowing. That day I gave my best shot.”
Asked whether newcomers with the ambition to reach the pinnacle of success in the glamour industry need a godfather to propel their fortunes, the actor replied: “I am popular as an actress, but I have never approached anybody to get me a role. I believe hard work and determination are essential for achieving success as an actor.”
Speaking about her inspiration, her mother, the young actor stated: “Mama has always been my inspiration. I consider myself lucky to have a mother who is my best friend, critic and guardian. I admire her a lot. However, my journey in celluloid was a challenging one and I am glad that she was always there to guide me. I am blessed to have parents who believed that I should follow my dreams. My family is my strength.”
On the work front, Dimple informed she had wrapped up shooting for ‘Sahanai’ and is all set to play the protagonist’s role in an upcoming serial. Dwelling on her upcoming projects, Dimple, who is waiting for a good film to come her way, said: “It will be too early to divulge everything related to my future projects. All I can say is that the audience will see me in a new avatar on television soon.”
