Bhubaneswar: In view of heavy rainfall prediction by India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state government Sunday alerted collectors of six districts to be prepared in case of an eventuality.
The IMD Sunday said heavy rainfall would occur in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Balasore and Bhadrak districts during the next 24 hours.
The office of Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has instructed the collectors of these districts to be prepared with adequate relief material in the event of extremely heavy rainfall, which may trigger floods in the riparian areas of Baitarani, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Brahmani.
Heavy downpour in the catchments could trigger flood in Baitarani, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Brahmani rivers, a senior official of SRC office here said. It may lead to water logging in some places, he said.
A communication has been sent to the six collectors directing them to remain fully prepared. ‘‘You are requested to remain in full preparedness to face any eventuality. Please ensure that field officials are in their respective position,’’ a communication from the office of the SRC to the collectors said.
The Met has also said that heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Nayagarh, Boudh, Angul, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur and Jharsuguda during the next 48 hours.
The rainfall would occur under the influence of upper air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal.
The upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood and it extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to shape up during the next 24 hours, the Met said.
